    Colonial differences in intercultural education: on interculturality in the Andes and the decolonization of intercultural dialogue

    This article pushes for the possibility of alternative ways of thinking about the concept of interculturality depending on where and by whom it is being articulated (the geopolitics and body politic of knowledge). To illustrate this, the focus is shifted away from the policies of the European Union and UNESCO to the Andean region of Latin America where the notion of interculturalidad is not only a subject on the educational agenda but has also become a core component of indigenous social movements’ demands for decolonization. Part of the argument of this article is that interculturalidad, with its roots in the historical experience of colonialism and in the particular, rather than in assertions of universality, offers a perspective on interculturality that relies on other epistemologies.     In this article we compare how the native population of Latin America and their culture is represented in History schoolbooks both in Sweden and in Colombia. The aim was to find out if there are differences and similarities in the reproduction of the native community in both countries. The study shows that Colombian schoolbooks give information more thoroughly, describing and explaining the facts, however, both countries consistently show the trend to represent the natives as being different and inferior, especially when describing their way of living and their knowledge. We find explanations about what they owned and what they did not own, what they knew and did not know, all focused from a Eurocentric perspective

    Development of Combined Dual-Pump Vibrational and Pure-Rotational Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (DPVCARS and PRCARS) System

    Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) [1,2] is a spatially-resolved, time-resolved spectroscopic technique for quantitative measurements in reacting flows [3 – 6]. This work demonstrates a combination of N2/O2/CO2 dual-pump vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (DPVCARS) system and two-beam pure-rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (PRCARS) system. It is based on the previous development of combined VCARS and PRCARS system which was used to obtain temperature measurements in non-premixed H2-air flames. The new combined system will be used to measure the temperature profiles and major species concentrations such as N2/O2/CO2 in laminar counter-flow non-premixed (CH4/Air) and partially-premixed (CH4/H2/Air) flames. The new system is being characterized in H2/Air diffusion flames stabilized over a Hencken burner. CO2 will be added to the oxidizer stream for the system to assess the precision of the system while performing concentration measurements. The new combined system has shown good precision temperature using PRCARS (better than 3%) and N2/O2 mole-fraction ratio (better than 5%) using DPVCARS

    Two-Color Polarization Spectroscopy Measurement of Nitric Oxide

    Nitric Oxide (NO) is a greenhouse gas that contributes to smog and acid rain. Commercial combustion engines and turbines are significant sources of NO emission. Two-color Polarization Spectroscopy (PS) will be used to measure the collision-induced resonances of NO in gas mixtures. The effect of collision partners, such as He and Ar, on the line-shape of NO molecule will be studied. This experiment requires the use of two dye laser systems to generate 226nm beam from frequency mixing of 355nm and 622nm. This enhanced the scan range and improved the ease of operation. One dye laser will be used to generate circularly polarized pump beam, which will be tuned to excite the transitions across the X-A (0,0) band of NO. Another dye laser will be used to generate linearly polarized 226nm probe beam, which will be used to probe the transitions. A photomultiplier tube will be used to collect the polarization signal. Nitrogen will be mixed with the NO gas mixtures to measure the sensitivity of this technique. In the current stage of the project, the pump beam is aligned and its wavelength is controlled by a LabVIEW programmed motor. Laser induced fluorescence data was collected to calibrate the scanning frequency with NO’s excitation frequency. The excitation spectrum of NO from this specific pump-probe transition pair will help us understand the fundamental collision dynamics of NO and create a more quantitative technique of NO concentration measurement

    El presente artículo se centra en la problematización de reclamación de la Unión Europea, según la cual, el diálogo intercultural constituye un método para hablar a través de las fronteras culturales, basadas en la empatía mutua y no la dominación. Más precisamente, el objetivo es analizar qué se está construyendo como contraparte del diálogo intercultural a través del discurso producido por la Unión Europea. Para responder a la pregunta, los documentos de la política europea sobre el diálogo intercultural se analizan sobre la base de una perspectiva poscolonial. Como una interpretación, la Unión Europea se apropia de los símbolos históricos y figuras del pensamiento colonial para autorizar y legitimar sus objetivos actuales. En el ámbito de la Unión Europea, los europeos son retratados como una existencia a priori histórica, mientras que los excluidos de este concepto son evocados para demostrar su diferencia en comparación con el europeo. Sin embargo, los resultados muestran que los sujetos no considerados como europeos sirven como marcadores de la actual multiculturalidad del espacio europeo. Por lo tanto, el diálogo intercultural parece consolidar las diferencias entre europeo y Otro -el “nosotros” y el “ellos” en el diálogo– y no, como en línea con su objetivo, acercar a sujetos entre sí.The present article focuses on problematizing the European Union’s claim that intercultural dialogue constitutes an advocated method of talking through cultural boundaries based on mutual empathy and non-domination. More precisely, the aim is to analyze who is being constructed as counterparts of the intercultural dialogue through the discourse produced by the EU. To answer the question, European policy documents on intercultural dialogue are analyzed drawing on a postcolonial perspective. As an interpretation, the EU appropriates historical symbols and colonial figures of thought to authorize its current objectives. Within the realm of the EU, Europeans are portrayed as having an a priori historical existence, while the ones excluded from this notion are evoked to demonstrate its difference in comparison to the European one. The results show that subjects not considered as Europeans serve as markers of the multicultural present of the space. Thus, intercultural dialogue seems to consolidate differences between European and Other – the ‘We’ and ‘Them’ in the dialogue – rather than, as in line with its purpose, bringing subjects together

    Three-Dimensional Modelling of a Microtubular SOFC: A Multiphysics Approach

    Microtubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (µ-SOFC) are suited to a broad spectrum of applications with power demands ranging from a few watts to several hundred watts. µ-SOFC’s possess inherently favourable characteristics over alternate configurations such as high thermo-mechanical stability, high volumetric power density and rapid start-up times. Computational modelling at the design level minimises cost and maximises productivity, giving critical insight into complex SOFC phenomena and their interrelationships. To date, models have been limited by oversimplified geometries, often failing to account for oxidant supply complexities, gas distribution within pores and radiative heating effects (1-3). Here, a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of electrodes, electrolyte, current collectors and furnace is considered using COMSOL Multiphysics. The distribution of temperature, current density, electrical potential, pressure and gas concentrations throughout the cell are simulated. Results show good correlation with experimental data and the model is reliable for prediction of fuel cell performance within set parameters

    Performance measurement of the upgraded Microcab-H4 with academic drive cycle

    The original Microcab-H4, a hybrid fuel cell car, was tested with Academic drive cycle. After several years, the car was upgraded and tested with the ECE 15 drive cycle. The result showed the car has higher energy efficiency. However, the result could not be compared to the original car due to different drive cycle test. This research was done to measure the performance and energy efficiency of the Upgraded Microcab-H4 with Academic drive cycle. The measure of car energy efficiency was done through four tests: Run on battery, run on battery and Ballard fuel cell, and run on battery, Ballard, and Horizon fuel cell. The energy efficiency was calculated based on the hydrogen consumption after 5 cycles. The lowest energy efficiency was run on battery and Ballard fuel cell with (1.01 km/MJ). The highest energy efficiency was run on battery, Ballard, and Horizon fuel cells (1.10 km/MJ), which is higher than previous tests
